What is SEO and Why Does My Website Need It?

That's a great question, so let’s have a proper chat about SEO shall we? SEO stands for "Search Engine Optimisation" which was a phrase first coined in around 1997 (one year before aprompt was formed!) by a marketing company in the US – and if you’ve ever heard whispers about it or seen it pop up in endless marketing articles with no explanation in sight, don’t worry. By the end of this article, you’ll not only know what SEO is but why your website definitely needs it. Ready? Brew yourself a cuppa; we’ve got a lot to cover.

What is SEO, Exactly?

Right, let’s start with the basics. SEO is the process of optimising your website so that search engines like Google, Bing (yes, people still use Bing), and others can read, understand, and rank it better. In plain English? It helps your website show up when people search online for something related to what you do.

For instance, if you run a cleaning company in Hereford, you want your website to pop up when someone types “best cleaning company in Hereford” or “office cleaner near me” into Google. SEO increases the chances of this happening. Without it, your site could end up lost in the dark recesses of the internet, on page 93 of Google where nobody dares to tread.

Why Should I Care About SEO?

Ah, here’s the crux of it. You’ve got a lovely website – maybe it shows off your services, products, or incredible talent – but having a beautiful website isn’t enough if no one can find you online. And that’s where SEO steps in like your website’s personal voice, shouting, “Look over here! We’re amazing!”

What does SEO do?

1. SEO Drives Traffic To Your Website

In business, more eyes on your website mean more potential customers. SEO helps you attract those eyeballs by getting you higher in the natural search results (as in not Sponsored/Paid Ads). Most people rarely venture past page one of Google when searching for something – some don’t even scroll halfway down! If your website is optimised well and regularly, it’s more likely to make it into those top spots.

2. SEO Builds Trust and Credibility

Let’s say you search for a plumber. You’re likely to trust the ones at the top of Google, right? That’s because we tend to associate higher rankings with credibility. (Google must think they’re good; otherwise, why would they be at the top?). Good SEO does just that – it sends signals to Google that your website is trustworthy, well-built, and relevant. Over time, this builds confidence in your brand.

3. SEO is a Cost-Effective Online Marketing Tool

Some marketing strategies cost a fortune and require a small army of specialists, but SEO? Once it’s set up properly and done on a regular basis, it can work its magic 24/7 without draining your wallet. That’s not to say it’s free (time and expertise are always involved), but compared to pay-per-click ads or splashy campaigns, it’s one of the most cost-efficient ways to grow your business online.

4. SEO Gives You a Competitive Edge

Chances are, your competitors are already investing in SEO. If you’re not, you’re handing them potential customers on a silver platter. By optimising your website, you have a chance to outrank them – and swipe a bit of their web traffic while you’re at it. No hard feelings, eh?

How Does SEO Work?

Great question... There are three main pillars to SEO, and when they work together, your website will be in shipshape condition.

1. On-Page SEO

This is the stuff you can control on your website. It includes things like:

  • Keywords: These are the words people type into Google (like “affordable web design” or “builders in Hereford”). By sprinkling the right keywords throughout your website – in headings, paragraphs, in meta info and even image descriptions and filenames – search engines will get to know what your site is about.
  • Content: Quality, original content is king and is the food for websites. Whether it’s a blog post (like this one), product description (a full product description telling your customer everything about your product as if you were in front of them), or FAQ page (which we love!), the more helpful and engaging your content is, the happier search engines and visitors will be. Afterall, the point of your website is to be your friendly online salesperson with all the answers and helpful guidance - not necessarily a hard sell.
  • Optimised URLs & Meta Info: These might sound technical, but it’s simply about naming your web pages clearly using SEO friendly URLs. For instance, “/webdesigners-Hereford” is much better than “/services”) and providing a short snippet that tells people what they’ll find on your page.

2. Off-Page SEO or Off-Site SEO

Not everything happens directly on your website. Off-page SEO is all about building your website’s reputation elsewhere on the internet. Think of it as networking for your business:

  • Backlinks: When other websites link to your website, it acts like a vote of confidence for search engines. The more high quality links you have, the more Google tends to trust you (this includes YouTube). However, be careful not to fall for quick-fix or black hat SEO tricks or 'buying back links' because this could harm your reputation with Google and can seriously impact your search rankings. If anyone promises they can make your website 1st in Google in a week using natural SEO techniques, they're probably not telling you the whole truth.
  • Social Proof: Shares, reviews, and mentions on social media also contribute to your online prowess.

3. Technical SEO

Technical SEO is a phrase we don't usually use when we do SEO for our clients because it's something that we automatically include in the websites we create. However not all web designers take technical SEO into account when they build a website and some might even charge you extra for the privilege (which we think is wrong). Anyway, back to topic... technical SEO is just about making sure your website runs smoothly and Google can understand it. Things like:

  • Page Speed: Nobody likes waiting for a page to load, and Google knows it. Fast-loading websites rank better.
  • Mobile Responsiveness: With more users browsing the web on their phones, a site that looks dodgy or breaks on mobile devices won’t get far in the rankings.
  • Site Structure: Properly organised pages and menus make your site easier for users to navigate – and easier for search engines to crawl.

Can I Do SEO Myself, or Do I Need a Pro?

Here’s the thing: SEO really isn’t rocket science, but it isn’t a walk in the park either. There’s a lot to learn, and because the rules of the game keep changing (thanks to those cheeky Google algorithms), it can feel a bit overwhelming if you're new to it. If you’re a dab hand with technology, have lots of time and fancy giving it a go, then it's great fun if you're a wordsmith and incredibly rewarding when you see your website getting higher up the rankings.
